Best Day Trips From Tuscaloosa for Memorial Day Weekend

Alabama Gold Camp

Address: 1398 Rd. 5, Lineville, AL 36266

Panning for gold and searching for other treasures are activities everyone can enjoy. After all, who can resist the idea of finding some of the following?

  • Gold
  • Red garnet
  • Native American artifacts
  • Fossils
  • Citrine

Spend some time exploring the miles of creek available at Alabama Gold Camp in Linville, and you'll be able to pan, sluice, dredge, and use a metal detector to see what you can find. Whether you have amazing luck or have trouble finding a treasure, you're sure to have fun. And you might even have a cool story and treasure to take home from Alabama's Gold Belt!

Alabama Adventure and Splash Adventure

Address: 4599 Splash Adventure Parkway, Bessemer, AL 35022

Whether you're looking for some thrills or some tamer adventures, Alabama Adventure and Splash Adventure in Bessemer has it all! A combination amusement park and water park, the attraction offers kid-friendly and lower-thrill rides as well as ones that will get your heart beating fast with excitement. The Cheddar Chase, which is opening soon, offers thrills with tight turns, sudden stops, and big drops. At the water park, the Sidewinder slides you through multiple figure-eight twists and turns before dropping you into a runout pool. For tamer water activities that are still fun, the Lazy River fits the bill.

Dismals Canyon

Address: 901 Hwy. 8, Phil Campbell, AL 35581

Located in northwest Alabama, Dismal Canyon is a Nature Conservatory that spans 85 acres. You can take a 1.5-mile hike on the canyon floor to see huge boulders, thundering waterfalls, and more natural wonders. And if you'd like to stay into the evening, take a guided night tour to see "glowworms" - tiny bioluminescent creatures that are found in only a few places in the world.

International Motorsports Hall of Fame

Address: 3198 Speedway Blvd., Lincoln, AL 35096

Named as one of the top five best racing museums by Newsweek, the International Motorsports Hall of Fame is a must-see for automotive fans. A 30,000-square-foot showroom has over 120 vehicles, including one of Bobby Allison's race cars and Dale Earnhardt's first championship car. The Hall of Fame also houses over 14,000 volumes of publications and research materials related to motorsports, and on days when there's not a race, you can take a tour of the Talladega Superspeedway.

Backstreet Opry

Address: 1st Ave. NE, Vernon, AL 35592

The Backstreet Opry is truly a one-of-a-kind music venue. The vibe is extremely casual, and admission is free. Country, blues, and gospel musicians drive in - some from long distances - and play for free, and they might switch up the instruments they're playing in the middle of a set. When a reporter visited, refreshments consisted of a friendly setup with cakes and cookies in Tupperware containers, soda bottles, plastic cups, and a donation jar nearby. It's the type of place where you might walk in the door not knowing anyone, but that won't be true by the time you leave.
