Discover Outdoor Adventure Near Tuscaloosa

Explore the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk - Tuscaloosa, AL

Address: 2710 Jack Warner Pkwy., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401

Tuscaloosa's beautiful riverfront overlooks the Black Warrior River (though technically, this section is actually a reservoir known as William Bacon Oliver Lake). The Riverwalk is a great place to start exploring, just minutes from many Tuscaloosa homes for sale. With separate painted lanes for walkers and cyclists, the Riverwalk extends 4.5 miles along the river's southern shoreline, starting at Capitol Park. It connects multiple riverfront parks, playgrounds, and other attractions like links on one long, continuous chain.

Mountain Bike Tannehill Ironworks State Park - McCalla, AL

Address: 12632 Confederate Pkwy., McCalla, AL 35111

Less than 30 minutes east of Tuscaloosa, Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park is one of the premier mountain biking destinations in West-Central Alabama. Over 17 miles of technical trails crisscross the park's hilly, densely wooded landscape just outside of McCalla. In addition to being a fantastic place to ride a bike, the state park also includes:

  • More than 250 campsites and cabins
  • The John Wesley Hall Grist Mill and Iron & Steel Museum of Alabama
  • Miniature railroad
  • Creek fishing access

Fish the Black Warrior River - Northport, AL

Address: 18450 Blue Creek Rd., Northport, AL 35475

The Black Warrior River offers some of the best fishing in the Tuscaloosa area, especially in spring when bass, crappie, and catfish spawn in shallow creeks and coves along this slow, meandering river. The Black Warrior River is controlled by a series of locks and dams, and some of the best fishing is in the stretch below the Bankhead Dam in Northport. Public access, including a canoe landing and riverside camping at Blue Creek Public Use Area, is located downriver from the dam.

Hike and Kayak at Lake Nicol - Tuscaloosa, AL

Address: Lake Nicol Rd., Tuscaloosa, AL 35406

Spanning 384 acres and located less than 20 minutes from Downtown Tuscaloosa, Lake Nicol is a prime spot for paddling. The lakeside park features a small gravel boat ramp that is ideal for canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards, and the lake usually offers calm, sheltered waters even on breezy days. It's also a great place for a scenic family hike, with cliff-top trails that provide dramatic views across the lake.

Disc Golf at Palmore Park - Tuscaloosa, AL

Address: 3701 Fosters Ferry Rd., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401

Spring is prime disc golf season, and the Palmore Park Disc Golf Course is one of the best places to play in Tuscaloosa. Featuring 18 holes across mostly flat terrain, it's a great course for beginners to learn on. That being said, there are trees here for every skill level, all the way up to Gold tees for pros with several holes over 900 feet. The course mostly runs along the edge of the park, avoiding other use areas so that disc golfers don't have to worry much about traffic. For more disc golf in the area, check out these other courses operated by the Tuscaloosa Park & Recreation Authority:
