Find Comfort Food With These Tuscaloosa Restaurants

Looking for stellar dining that just hits the spot? Here are the Tuscaloosa restaurants you should visit.

What do you think of when you hear the term "comfort food"? For some, it might be calorie-laden but delicious, over-the-top fare, and maybe something you don't eat that often. For others, comfort food harks back to a beloved tradition, maybe involved with good, hearty ingredients. No matter what your concept of comfort food is, we all need it now and then. It's important, now that you're living your dream in the house you bought (or are soon to buy) from Tuscaloosa homes for sale — that you find your happy place for comfort food.

Our real estate agents are thrilled to point the way.

  1. Local Roots. 1665 N. McFarland Blvd., Tuscaloosa
Just as the name implies, Local Roots is all about connecting with local foods and family connections. Inspired by the owner's admiration for his hard-working grandfather and his connection to growing things, Local Roots offers simple food but also food with an accent on flavor and wholesomeness. Enjoy burgers, sandwiches, salads, and chicken tenders, embellished with made-from-scratch sauces. And how does a strawberry lemon or butterscotch blondie shake sound?

  2. Glory Bound Gyro Co. 1301 University Blvd., Tuscaloosa
Gyros have really made their mark, advancing from the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. to all corners of our country. With Glory Bound Gyro Co., you get a multitude of delicious choices, including Steak, Lamb, Pesto/pepperjack, Buffalo Chicken, Barbecue Ranch, and many others. For those who'd like something a little higher on the comfort food scale, there are several choices of pizza, some with distinctively Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors. Also, check out the salads, sides, and appetizers. Very yummy.

  3. King's Kitchen. 501 Hargrove Rd E., Tuscaloosa
There's nothing that says comfort food like home-cooked Southern fare, and King's Kitchen is where it's at in Tuscaloosa. There's a different special every day: Chicken and Dumplings, Baked Pork Chops, Beef Tips and Rice, Chicken and Dressing Casserole, Meat Loaf, Spaghetti Casserole, and Southern Fried Catfish Filet or Southern Fried Whiting.

  4. Baumhower's. 500 Harper Lee Drive, Tuscaloosa
    Baumhower's
was started in 1981 by Bob Baumhower, All-American from the University of Alabama (and six-time All-Pro for the Miami Dolphins). Baumhower's is credited with introducing Buffalo-style chicken wings to Alabama, and we're so glad they did when they opened their first restaurant in Tuscaloosa. You might start out by visiting one of the specials, such as Girls' Night Out on Thursdays, or Burger of the Day Sunday through Friday. But any night is a fun night. After all, the main concept from the founding year was to create a fun restaurant with lots of TVs and an athletic setting. As for the menu, wings of course prevailed, but so did such comfort treats as Bambam (Alabama Gulf) Shrimp, Grilled Fish Tacos, Pot Roast Bowl, and Gourmet Burgers, and so much more.

  5. Hooligan's. 515 15th Street and 1351 McFarland Blvd. NE, Tuscaloosa
Do you like your comfort food with a Mediterranean accent? Then Hooligan's is for you. Patrons love the fast and friendly service, as well as the delicious menu. It's well known that a Mediterranean diet can provide healthful food while also offering all the comforts of, well, comfort food. Try out some of these scrumptious items: Greek Salad; Garden Salad Lentil Soup; Pita Club Wrap; Tabouli; Tzatziki Dip; Kafta Kabab; and the Turbo Gyro. Also suggested: any of the Specialty Spuds or Burger offerings.
